The whole of England is celebrating England’s consecration in Europe. Coach Sarina Wiegman told a press conference that she had her “first beer in years” to celebrate the European Championship.
The Dutchwoman, who has won the last two European Championships, with the Netherlands in 2017 and England in 2022, was interrupted at a press conference by her players, who invaded the room and began chanting ‘Three Lions’.
“I’ve already lost my voice and it’s only been a while,” Wiegman said. “I don’t think I’ve realized what we’ve done yet. We had the whole of England behind us. We are very proud of our fans. We need a couple of days to realize what we have done. When I took the job, I knew there was potential and quality.” “For the first time in years I’ve had a beer,” Wiegman added with a chuckle.
Looking ahead, Wiegman said that now that they have won this title, expectations will be “very high” for next year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
“You have to keep in mind that many teams can win these tournaments. We have seen it in this European Championship. Germany, France, Sweden, Spain…. They are very strong teams. While the bigger teams keep improving, the teams below them are improving as well. It’s not easy to win these tournaments and that’s what’s going to happen next year,” he said.
The highlight of the press conference was the players, who invaded the room while singing and dancing. One woman even stood on the table to celebrate. Absolute madness. See it here:
